PIMS 2024: Toyota Motor Philippines uncovers “Beyond Zero” vision

Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) made a powerful statement at the 2024 Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS) by launching its “Beyond Zero” initiative, a comprehensive approach aimed at achieving Carbon Neutrality while fostering a sustainable mobility ecosystem. This ambitious strategy reflects Toyota’s commitment to not only reducing emissions but also positively impacting society and the environment. During an exclusive media presentation at the Toyota Manila Bay dealership, TMP outlined its multifaceted strategy centered around three key pillars: Electrification, Diversification, and Intelligence.

Electrification: A Multi-Pathway Approach

In the realm of Electrification, TMP showcased its diverse range of electrified vehicles (xEVs) tailored to meet regional and consumer needs. The lineup includes Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), and Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Vehicles (FCEVs). Notably, the company introduced the Corolla Cross H2 Concept, a prototype powered by a hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engine, providing media participants with an exclusive ride experience.

TMP Corporate Affairs Group’s first vice president, Josephine Villanueva, emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive roadmap for xEV adoption in the Philippines. She highlighted the importance of government support and robust charging infrastructure, advocating for the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA) and a target of 50% xEV market penetration by 2040.

Diversification: Meeting Unique Mobility Needs

On the Diversification front, Toyota is committed to exploring various energy sources to ensure energy self-reliance and security in Asia. TMP aims to cater to the diverse mobility needs of Filipinos by not only offering a wide product lineup but also by developing innovative mobility services for specific communities. A highlight was the Next Generation Tamaraw, designed to be versatile and environmentally friendly, promoting sustainable manufacturing.

Intelligence: Data-Driven Sustainability

In its Intelligence pillar, TMP focused on leveraging data and connected technologies to create a smarter mobility ecosystem. Ma. Cristina Fe Arevalo, president of Toyota Mobility Solutions Philippines, discussed ongoing efforts in vehicle optimization and carbon emission analytics. This data-driven approach aims to enhance travel efficiency across sectors like logistics and public transportation while raising awareness about carbon footprints.

Life Cycle Action: Commitment Beyond Production

TMP’s commitment to sustainability extends throughout the entire vehicle lifecycle. The company aims to achieve carbon neutrality in its manufacturing by 2035 through renewable energy and efficient practices such as responsible vehicle dismantling and battery recycling to minimize waste – among others.

TMP president Masando Hashimoto closed his speech by stressing the need for collaboration among stakeholders, including government, private sector, and consumers, to realize the “Beyond Zero” vision. He called for united efforts to build a sustainable and prosperous future for the Philippines.
