With 2024 coming to an end and the new year fast approaching, many are busy with preparations to welcome 2025 with a fresh slate and a hopeful mind. The entire year proved to be eventful for many, especially for those within the entertainment industry. Before the new year begins, let’s take a second to look back and reflect on some of the most memorable happenings of 2024.

January

Starting in January, actor Diego Loyzaga found himself in the middle of controversy following yoga teacher Alexis Suapengco’s viral posts on social media. Suapengco, who was the mother of his daughter Hailey, had spoken up about how the actor had kicked her and their child out of his house for another woman. She also revealed that Loyzaga had threatened to stop giving financial support to their child if she didn’t take down her post. Fortunately, the two have since reconciled with them being seen together during Hailey’s christening in May.

February

The month of February saw actress Mariel Rodriguez under scrutiny for her now-deleted post on Instagram where she can be seen undergoing a glutathione drip procedure at her husband Senator Robin Padilla’s office in the Senate, with netizens calling her out for the inappropriate display. Meanwhile, fans of showbiz couple Bea Alonzo and Dominic Roque were shocked over the news of their split which was confirmed by TV host Boy Abunda. While Abunda faced criticism over sharing the news without the consent of the pair, both Alonzo and Roque later addressed the issue on social media, stating that they “mutually decided to amicably end” their engagement.

March

Right at the beginning of March, the entire entertainment industry was saddened by the tragic loss of award-winning actress Jaclyn Jose due to a heart attack. March also saw the controversy between Bangsamoro pop singer Shaira Moro and Australian artist Lenka as the former’s hit song “Selos” received a copyright claim from the latter as it used the melody of her 2008 track “Trouble Is A Friend.” The song was later taken down before being uploaded once more with the proper license from Lenka.

April

K-pop girl group NewJeans

In April, K-pop girl group NewJeans and its now-former executive producer Min Hee-Jin were in the middle of an issue concerning entertainment company HYBE’s allegations of Min Hee-Jin attempting to take over ADOR, which is an agency under HYBE, as well as her complaints over creative similarities between NewJeans and Illit, a girl group under HYBE’s Belift Lab. Meanwhile, P-pop girl group 4th Impact was heavily criticized for opening a GoFundMe page asking for donations to support their 200 dogs. The girls later deleted the page and refunded all of the donations that were given to them following the backlash from netizens.

May

May saw the rise of the “Pillin Mo Ang Pilipinas” trend after the “Asoka makeup” trend circulated online, with many celebrities and content creators like Whamoscruz joining in on the fun. However, video editor JAK Seventy-Three called him out for using clips from his content without permission, leading Whamoscruz to post a 17-minute video talking about the situation. On a lighter note, Comedian and TV host Vice Ganda also joined the trend with the intent of showcasing important societal issues alongside his creative looks.

June

Content creators Rosmar Tan and Rendon Labador together with their fellow “Team Malakas” group members were declared as persona non grata by the municipal council of Coron following a video that trended online where the pair can be seen personally berating municipal employee Jho Cayabyab Trinidad for her post criticizing the social media personalities’ outreach program.

July

“Nation’s Girl Group” BINI made history as the first P-Pop artist to perform at KCON, the world’s largest K-pop fan and artist festival. On July 27, BINI members Jhoanna, Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, and Sheena gave a powerful performance of their latest single, “Cherry On Top,” at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles during the pre-show of the M Countdown stage.

August

P-pop icons BINI and SB19 at Billboard Korea’s

P-pop continues to make its way on the global stage as P-pop acts SB19 and BINI made history by receiving the prestigious Voices of Asia Award at Billboard Korea’s Billboard K POWER 100 event in Seoul, recognizing their contributions to global music and their efforts in promoting P-pop on the international stage. But who would forget the Yulo family drama taking over the online world after overshadowing the historic win of two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo at the Paris Olympics 2024?

Filipina artist Sophia Laforteza, alongside her fellow KATSEYE members Manon, Daniela, Lara, Megan, and Yoonchae, was welcomed by thousands of fans at Market! Market! in Taguig as they made their long-awaited debut in the Philippines with their Touchdown in Manila fan showcase.

Content creator Jen Barangan receives backlash for her video during singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo’s concert

TikTok content creator Jen Barangan found herself in hot water after filming herself with her phone’s flash on during Olivia Rodrigo’s concert in the Philippines, despite rules prohibiting flash photography. Her video, which she posted on TikTok, garnered 3.6 million views, sparking criticism from netizens for disregarding concert guidelines.

November

P-pop Kings SB19 expanded their global reach with a recent appearance on the Taiwanese survival reality show Atom Boyz, bringing their viral and hit single “GENTO” to another global stage showcasing their vocal talent and trending choreography.

December

The year is about to end but the drama and showbiz pasabog continue with December becoming a month of posting of screenshots. Starting with the controversy involving on-screen partner Maris Racal and Anthony Jennings, and Anthony’s ex-girlfriend Jam Villanueva with the latter exposing his former lover and love team’s intimate conversation. As netizens began to prepare for their holiday break, celebrity photographer BJ Pascual shocked everyone as he named emerging artist Denise Julia as the “most stressful personality” he had worked with, leaving the two to share screenshots that seemed to be leading to a legal battle. Well, a good thing happened for boys’ love fans as former BL couple Ohm Pawat and Nanon Korapat made subtle interactions during GMMTV’s Starlympics sports event after a rumored cold war between the two.
