Suarez set for possible Manila showdown with world champ Navarrete

Top-ranked super-featherweight contender Charly Suarez is preparing for a high-stakes fight in Manila this December, with a potential showdown against three-division world champion Emmanuel Navarrete.

Plans for the bout are currently in motion, with Suarez’s manager, Ilocos Sur politician Luis “Chavit” Singson, actively working to finalize the details.

“May laban na sa December. May championship na dapat,” Singson shared on Tuesday evening after Suarez and his team returned to Manila. If successful, this fight could be one of the biggest in Suarez’s career, potentially securing him a world title.

The 36-year-old Suarez catapulted into the spotlight after a decisive third-round knockout victory over American Jorge Castaneda in Glendale, Arizona. This win solidified his status as the No. 1 contender in the World Boxing Organization (WBO) 130-lb division, while also earning him a No. 5 ranking in the International Boxing Federation (IBF).

“We are planning to have this fight in Manila. It will depend on negotiations with Gov. Singson,” said Suarez, now the mandatory challenger for Navarrete due to his current ranking.

Suarez, a silver medalist in the 2014 Asian Games and a three-time Southeast Asian Games champion, returned to Manila last Saturday with his coach Delfin Boholst. His undefeated professional record now stands at 18-0, with ten knockouts, further boosting his confidence ahead of this potential title fight.
