Shear line, cyclone trough to bring rains this Christmas

Moderate to heavy rains will continue over several provinces in Luzon and Visayas until Christmas Day, based on the rainfall outlook PAGASA released on Monday attributed to the combined effects of the shear line and the trough of a tropical cyclone.

Rains measuring 50 to 100 millimeters, indicating moderate to heavy, are expected on Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon and Masbate in Luzon on December 23.

In Visayas, the affected provinces include Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Aklan, Capiz and Iloilo. Heavy to intense rains measuring 100 to 200 mm, meanwhile, will fall on Northern Samar.

Rains are still expected over the said areas by Christmas Eve (December 24) until Christmas Day (December 25), according to PAGASA. It will also affect the provinces Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan and Rizal during that period.

Weather forecasters warned of floods and landslides in vulnerable areas due to continuous rains.

“Forecast rainfall may be higher in mountainous and elevated areas. Moreover, impacts in some areas may be worsened by significant antecedent rainfall,” PAGASA said in a 5:00 a.m. weather advisory.

“The public and disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned are advised to take all necessary measures to protect life and property,” it added.
