PH to host 2024 regional confab on disaster risk

The Department of National Defense (DND) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will host this year’s Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR).

APMCDRR is a biennial multi-stakeholder meeting convened by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UDRR) and Manila will be the venue of the convention on October 14-18.

In a press briefing, DND Secretary Gilberto Teodoro underscored the vulnerability of the Philippines to natural calamities and its capabilities in disaster management.

“This meeting will provide avenue for not only exchanges of host practices ways, it will seek on the functional side rather than the academic side, to foster increase of coordination, cooperation in terms not only for response but for resilience.” Teodoro said.

He also reiterated the importance of the conference in confronting issues and financial costs, as well as cooperation in response to disaster risk.

Teodoro also said the event will open avenues to boost the local economy as the country will showcase its location as a venue for such activity.

This year’s APMCDRR theme is “Surge to 2030: Enhancing Ambition in Asia -Pacific To Accelerate Disaster Risk Reduction.”

The theme calls for the collective action of Asia Pacific countries towards the 2030 ambitions of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction to resolve current challenges to overcome future challenges in terms of disaster risks.
