Binan City, Laguna – Mayor Arman Dimaguila paid tribute to the new heroes of the country – the doctors and nurses and others on the frontlines fighting the pandemic – which has heavily impacted on the domestic economy and infected and killed thousands nationwide.

His call coincided with the ceremonial burning of the old and faded Philippine flag during the celebration of national Heroes Day – seen as the first local flag burning ceremony.

According to Section 14 of Republic Act 8491 or the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines,  “a flag worn out through wear and tear shall not be thrown away. It shall be solemnly burned to avoid misuse or desecration.”

Dimaguila said: “Thank you so much for joining us this morning especially for all those with us on Facebook Live, and media friends.

“Let us continue to remember our heroes, let us continue to be proud of our country. Today there are new heroes there are the front liners now to serve the country to fight the corona virus.

The event was graced by a brass band which played the requiem “Inang Bayan” as the flag bearers entered, with Miss Binan 2019 Aubrey Ambas.

The burnt flag was buried in front of the old town hall.
