THE Las Piñas City government on Friday announced the opening of 11 new funeral chapels at the public crematorium and columbarium in Barangay Ilaya.

Mayor Imelda Aguilar and Vice Mayor April Aguilar led the inauguration of the chapels, deemed as a significant expansion of the city government’s services to the residents, especially those who are underprivileged.

The columbarium has 3,500 niches that can accommodate up to 14,000 urns.

The chapels are equipped with a ramp at the back, which makes it accessible for persons with disabilities to visit their departed loved ones.

To date, the city’s columbarium has already cremated 1,200 bodies using the two existing machines.

During the inauguration, Mayor Aguilar also paid tribute to her husband, former mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar, who initiated the “Libreng Libing” project to alleviate the financial burdens of underprivileged residents.
