GM Torre to grace Marikina Chess Fanatics tilt at Rob Metro East

ASIA’s first Grandmaster (GM) Eugene Torre will make an appearance as the guest speaker at the opening of the Marikina Chess Fanatics Non-Master Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 10 at the 3rd floor Robinsons Metro East, Pasig City.

Torre, the founding president of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) was officially inducted into the World Chess Hall of Fame last October 2021.

“GM Eugene Torre is the perfect choice as guest speaker; most of the young kids today look up to him as their idol,” said sportsman Johnny “Joel” Gaudia, president of the Marikina Chess Federation.

“He is expected to encourage participants in this grassroots competition to continue to play the sport,” he added.

The tournament exclusive for Marikina Residents will have a time control of 15 minutes play to finish in this 1-day affair hosted by Chess Society of Parang Incorporated (CSPI).

The champion will pocket P3,000, while the runner-up will take home P2,000 and the third placer will receive P1,500. The fourth, fifth and sixth players will claim P1,000, P700, and P500, respectively, while the seventh to 10th placers will each get PP300 along with the top junior, top lady, top kiddie boy, top kiddie girl, youngest player and top CSPI.
