Cebu councilor seeks probe into city’s flawed track oval

A member of the Cebu City Council is demanding an investigation into the track oval of the Cebu City Sports Complex, which was recently used during the 2024 Palarong Pambansa.

Councilor Mary de Los Santos introduced a resolution expressing her concerns about the track oval, which she described as “a source of embarrassment.”

De los Santos called for the probe after learning that “one lane was found to be 1.5 meters short of the standard 400-meter distance and the other lanes had an average discrepancy of 0.88 meters.”

As a result, 11 of the 13 athletic event records that were broken were not recognized, affecting 19 athletes from five regions, de los Santos said during her privilege speech on Wednesday.

“Who should bear responsibility? What is the responsibility of the Local Government and the contractor?” asked de los Santos, a former athlete and running enthusiast, during the session.

The Cebu City Sports Complex was reopened to the public last week, but the oval is set to be closed again after the Pasigarbo sa Sugbo event next month.

Cebu City Sports Commission officials, led by chairman John Pages, announced that repairs will soon be made to correct the discrepancies in the oval’s measurements.

The contractor, SBD Builders, has been working on the oval repairs since it was closed in March last year, prior to its reopening for the Palarong Pambansa.
