New hub for independent musicians

Jaworski Garcia, also known as Boss J and head of Blacksheep Records, recently shared why he decided to part ways with Viva Records. Despite the separation, Garcia made it clear that the split was friendly and based on mutual understanding.

“Boss Vic (del Rosario) gave me everything. Blacksheep Records Manila wouldn’t exist without him, and I’ll always be thankful for the chance he gave me during the pandemic,” Garcia told Manila Standard Entertainment.

“Even though we didn’t reach all our goals, my main artists, like Magnus Haven, are still with Vicor. I left one or two artists with Viva because we thought they would have better opportunities there. The separation was mutual,” he reiterated.

Garcia explained that his decision to go independent was driven by a need to stand out.

“Viva has so many artists, and we were all competing for space on platforms like Spotify. I saw a chance to go independent and decided to take it,” he said.

Blacksheep Records has also opened BLKSHPMLA Studios, a new music studio at Alpha Square Building, 138 Sandoval Avenue, Pinagbuhatan, Pasig. Garcia hopes this will be a new home for musicians, continuing his commitment to supporting independent talent.

According to Boss J, the newly opened studio can be used for music video shoots, photoshoots, and other visual projects.

“First of all, the studio is the culmination of my dream of being part of the music advertisement and entertainment industry. I saw the need for an alternative option for these industries because when we were looking, the rates were quite high,” Garcia expressed.

“So, what I did, since I have many friends in the industry, I was lucky to get this place, and I can offer it to them at a lower price. That was my target—to provide our industry peers with a quality, well-equipped, and spacious studio where we wouldn’t be fighting over parking spaces,” he went on.

Currently, Boss J manages OPM singer-songwriter Ethan Loukas and the band Section Juan.

“Ethan—someone sent me one of his songs back in 2017, and I instantly fell in love with it. I realized we have a Filipino with a world-class voice, so beautiful. And of course, I have an eye for good things around us. I said, Ethan looks like Piolo Pascual or even Tom Rodriguez, so he’s got a strong presence. And I think Ethan saw my eagerness to help him,” Garcia shared.

Ethan is set to release a back-to-back single, one original and one revival song—Jericho Rosales’s song “Pusong Ligaw.”
