BINI vs. SB19: Fans debate on X over who paves the way for P-pop

Fans are having a heated word war on X about whether BINI or SB19 is leading the P-pop scene. With their success in promoting the popular genre, they have sparked fervent discussions among fans. One of the hottest topics on social media is the question: Who paved the way for the genre—SB19 or BINI?

The discussion began when veteran journalist Karen Davila made comments on the rise of P-pop during the closing spiel on TV Patrol.

Maganda du’n, ‘di ba, ang K-pop sikat sa buong mundo. Maganda, ‘yung BINI, silang magbubukas ng pintuan para [sa] P-pop. ‘Pag sumikat sila, sisikat din ‘yung iba pang Pilipino,” said Davila.

While BLOOMs (BINI’s fans) echoed what the broadcaster pointed out, some fans raised their eyebrows sharing their sentiments that SB19 had been doing that ever since.

P-pop girl group BINI recently released its latest single ‘Cherry On Top’

SB19’s fans (A’TINs) point to the group’s groundbreaking achievements, such as their international tours and collaborations, as evidence of their pioneering role among P-pop groups. On the other hand, BINI, a promising girl group, has also made significant strides in the industry breaking records on music charts and streaming platforms.

Supporters of BINI contend that the group has played a crucial role in showcasing the power and versatility of female P-pop acts. With their upbeat songs and relatable lyrics, the eight-member group has connected with a wide audience, particularly among the younger generation.

P-pop traces back to the 1970s with the emergence of Pinoy pop, an early form that blended rock, folk, and ballads, often addressing social and political issues. However, the influence of musicians from around the globe has significantly shaped the modern P-pop sound.

Prominent new acts in P-pop include Alamat, VXON, 1ST.ONE, G22, KAIA, Dione, Hori7on, BGYO, MNL48, and NEW:ID are making their own ways to bring P-pop to the world.
