PARIS (Via PLDT Home) – The Philippines’ Aira Villegas pulled off a stunning split decision, 3-2 victory  in the women’s 50 kg category over hometown favorite Wassila Lkhadiri to secure the Philippines’ first boxing medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics

Just two days after her dominant birthday win over Algeria’s Roumaysa Boualam, the 29-year-old Villegas knew she faced a formidable challenge against Lkhadiri, who had the home crowd behind her.

Despite the daunting task, the first-time Olympian’s aggression and powerful blows in the final round proved to be the difference-maker.

While Lkhadiri fought valiantly, Villegas’s speed and counter-punching ability gave her the edge.

With the win, Villegas assured the Philippines of a bronze as she advanced to the semifinals against Turkiye’s Buse Naz Çakıroğlu on Wednesday, August 7, at 4:18 a.m. Philippine time, where a win will guarantee her of a silver medal.
