The Quezon City Council on Wednesday issued a statement expressing strong concern over what it described as an “inappropriate and offensive” statement made by Quezon City 4th District Rep. Bong Suntay during a congressional hearing.
“As lawmakers, we are duty-bound to uphold the very laws we enact to protect and promote the rights and dignity of women. Such remarks, which demean and objectify women, have no place in public discourse and are a direct affront to the values of respect and gender equality that Quezon City stands for,” the statement read.
“They erode the standard of professionalism expected of public officials and risk normalizing attitudes that undermine the progress we have made in advancing women’s rights and meaningful participation in governance and society,” it added.
The council emphasized that the responsibility to uphold the dignity of women does not rest on women alone.
In line with Women’s Month, it called upon men to stand as allies and advocates “actively promoting respect, challenging harmful stereotypes, and fostering safe and inclusive spaces in our homes, workplaces, and communities.”
“The Quezon City Council remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that all women are treated with dignity, respect, and equality, as enshrined in the laws we uphold and enforce,” the statement concluded.
