The Department of Education (DepEd) will intensify its school-based feeding program in 2026 following a budget increase to P25.7 billion.
Assistant Secretary Roger Masapol said the additional funding aims to address malnutrition and stunting, with early childhood education placed as a top priority.
The expanded program will cover all kindergarten and Grade 1 pupils, while severely malnourished learners in Grades 2 to 6 will be prioritized.
Nutritionally at-risk high school students, including pregnant learners, will also be included.
Masapol said supporting pregnant students helps them stay in school while ensuring proper nutrition for both mother and child, noting the higher risk of stunting among children born to teenage mothers.
Under the new strategy, students will receive daily hot meals cooked in schools and nutritious food packs, with feeding extended through school breaks to prevent weight loss during long vacations.
