LTO summons 24 truck owners due to worn-out tires

Amid an intensified campaign to ensure the roadworthiness of trucks across the country, Land Transportation Office chief Vigor Mendoza II issued show-cause orders (SCO) against 24 registered truck owners for various violations.

The SCO stemmed from the operations of the agency’s enforcers that found all the 24 trucks to be using worn-out tires deemed unsafe for land travel.

“We observed that there has been an utter disregard to the road safety by some erring truck owners. In our aggressive campaign, some of the common violations are worn-out tires, which are really dangerous not only to the truck drivers but also to other road users,” he said.

“We will not allow these erring truck owners to disregard the traffic rules and regulations. The instruction of our Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista is very clear, to make the roads safe for all users and our aggressive campaign against trucks with questionable road worthiness is part of it.”

Mendoza said the decision is part of the LTO’s ‘Stop Road Crash’ advocacy aimed at reducing, if not eliminating, vehicular accidents.

LTO Law Enforcement Service director Eduardo de Guzman said the registered owners of apprehended trucks had been instructed to bring the vehicles to the nearest LTO offices for road worthiness inspection.

De Guzman ordered truck owners to submit a written and notarized explanation why they must not be charged for violation of Republic Act 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code.

The involved trucks were placed under alarm pending the compliance of the order for the motor vehicle inspection, according to the LTO chief.

Mendoza directed the LTO enforcers to further intensify the campaign against trucks violating the road safety rules and regulations after the recent fatal Katipunan-Aurora Boulevard flyover incident in Quezon City that left four people dead and more than 20 other motorists injured.

“We would like to warn all truck drivers and operators to follow the law because what is at stake here is the life and limbs of all road users,” he noted.
