The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) reported that the observance of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day in Metro Manila was generally peaceful and orderly.
NCRPO Major General Sidney Hernia stated that the well-coordinated deployment of police officers across cemeteries, columbaria, transport terminals, and key gathering areas significantly contributed to the safety and order of this year’s Undas celebrations.
He noted that the increased presence of police officers allowed the NCRPO to effectively enforce security protocols and confirmed that there were no major incidents during the observance.
“We have worked tirelessly to ensure that Undas 2024 was a time for safe and solemn reflection. I commend our police personnel and all participating agencies and groups for their hard work and dedication,” the NCRPO chief said.
Hernia also expressed gratitude to local government units, nongovernmental organizations, volunteer groups, and other support networks for their invaluable assistance.
With this year’s Undas concluded successfully, the NCRPO is already preparing its security plans for the upcoming holiday season to maintain peace and safety throughout Metro Manila.
Reports showed that the crowd estimate at Manila North Cemetery was 189,000 as of 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, while Manila South Cemetery had an estimate of 43,370.
Manila Police District (MPD) director PBGen. Thomas Ibay meanwhile reported that the two public cemeteries, managed by the Manila government, attracted an estimated one million visitors.
Ibay attributed the smooth experience to extensive preparations, including traffic rerouting, which facilitated better access to the cemeteries. Favorable weather and adherence to city regulations also contributed to the calm atmosphere.
At the entrance gates, prohibited items such as bladed weapons, flammable materials, and cigarettes were confiscated, with the Manila North Cemetery recording 1,217 items and the Manila South Cemetery tallying 946, which included similar items along with playing cards.
Additionally, free transportation was offered to senior citizens and persons with disabilities during the three-day observance.
The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) reported a peaceful observance of Undas throughout Metro Manila, with Deputy director for Operations P/Brig. Gen. Ponce Rogelio Peñones Jr. noting that over 76 cemeteries were closely monitored.
Peñones reminded the public to take precautions, such as securing their homes and avoiding bringing prohibited items to the cemeteries. Approximately 18,000 PNP personnel were deployed to maintain peace and order in the region.
