A total of 806,254 liters of oil waste were collected from the sunken MTKR Terranova in Limay, Bataan, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Thursday. The operation, carried out by PCG’s contracted salvor, Harbor Star, began on August 19 and continues to make progress.
On Wednesday evening, Harbor Star reported its highest single-day recovery, siphoning 232,187 liters of oil from the vessel. The August 24 operation followed with an additional 121,724 liters, bringing the total collection to nearly 600,000 liters.
The MTKR Terranova, which was carrying 1.4 million liters of oil, sank off the coast of Limay, Bataan, on July 25. As of the latest operation on August 28, the rate of oil recovery reached 24,614 liters per hour.
Divers from Harbor Star conducted inspections of the pumps and hoses, confirming no leaks during the underwater survey.
Meanwhile, PCG personnel also collected oil samples for analysis, and the BRP Sindangan (MRRV-4407) monitored the ongoing siphoning, using water cannons to disperse minimal oil sheen at the site.
The PCG aims to complete the siphoning operations by next week.
