Baste Duterte slams PNP over ‘excessive force’ in KOJC raid

Davao City Mayor Sebastian Z. Duterte on Monday issued a statement criticizing the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) ongoing raid on the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) compound to arrest fugitive televangelist Pastor Apollo Quiboloy.

“We respect the implementation of any warrant of arrest as long as it is in accordance with the law,” Duterte wrote.

“However, we have observed that the PNP personnel led by General Marbil and General Torre are no longer following proper procedure in implementing the warrant especially the use of excessive force against innocent citizens and their unauthorized occupation at the KOJC compound,” he added.

The local chief executive said that as much as he wants to intervene, the police personnel will “only listen to the PNP Chief and to their Commander-In-Chief President Bongbong Marcos.”

Likewise, the Davao City Mayor addressed KOJC members to protest peacefully to ensure everyone’s safety.

“We acknowledge the right of the members of the KOJC to protest. However, I am asking you to do it in a peaceful manner and refrain from doing activities that will disrupt traffic flow to ensure the safety of your members and of the public,” Duterte said.

He also assured locals that the city’s safety and security remain the top priorities of the local government.

“We are committed to maintaining a peaceful and secure environment for all Dabawenyos, and we will continue to address any threats against our city,” Duterte wrote.

“This situation has already caused inconvenience to motorists, businesses, and the public. The public seeks clarification from the PNP, how long do you intend to stay at the KOJC property?” he concluded.

Policemen on Monday afternoon dispersed KOJC members gathered outside their compound amid rising tensions.
