BANATE, ILOILO – In a decisive move to protect Iloilo’s marine resources, the Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force apprehended two fishing vessels engaged in illegal fishing over the weekend, reinforcing the government’s commitment to sustainable fisheries.
Authorities from the Banate Municipal Police Station (MPS), Regional Intelligence Unit (RIU-6), and the Bantay Dagat Task Force intercepted the vessels in the waters of Barangay San Salvador, Banate, where they were caught using Danish Seine fishing, locally known as hulbot-hulbot.
The operation led to the seizure of two fishing boats, various paraphernalia, and approximately 30 kilos of illegally caught fish. Officials reiterated that Danish Seine fishing remains banned due to its destructive impact on marine ecosystems, particularly coral reefs and fish populations.
“Our seas provide livelihoods for thousands of coastal families. Illegal fishing not only depletes fish stocks, but also damages marine habitats critical for future generations,” a task force official stated.
The boat captains were informed of their charges and their constitutional rights under the Miranda Doctrine and the Anti-Torture Law before being transferred to the Banate MPS custodial facility. Formal charges are set to be filed today, March 17, 2025.
The Iloilo Provincial Government has intensified its crackdown on illegal fishing, recognizing its long-term threats to food security and economic stability in coastal communities.
“We urge all fisherfolk to adhere to sustainable fishing practices. Communities play a crucial role in protecting our seas by reporting illegal activities,” an official statement emphasized.
The Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force remains on high alert, vowing to continue strict enforcement and regular seaborne patrols to safeguard Iloilo’s marine resources.
