A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the southern Philippines on Saturday, the United States Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of damage.

The shallow quake hit just before 6:30 am (2230 GMT) about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the village of Barcelona on the east of Mindanao island, USGS said.

Many people were sleeping when the strong shaking jolted them from their beds.

The local seismological agency said no damage was expected from the earthquake. The quake reportedly originated on the sea off northeast of Lingig, Surigao del Sur, early Saturday morning.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the temblor, which was tectonic in origin and with a depth of nine kilometers occurred at 6:22 a.m.

In its report, the state volcanology and seismology agency said Intensity V was felt in Lingig, Hinatuan, and Bisglig City in Surigao del Sur; Rosario in Agusan del Sur and Maco and Monkayo in Davao de Oro. Intensity IV meanwhile was experienced in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro, and Davao City.
