PAGASA: LPAs in Batangas, Eastern Visayas form into tropical depressions

The two low pressure areas that state weather forecasters were monitoring over Batangas and Eastern Visayas late Friday developed into tropical depressions named “Butchoy” and “Carina.”

‘Butchoy’ is the weather disturbance affecting west of Batangas over the West Philippine Sea, said PAGASA in a bulletin issued at 11:00 p.m., July 19.

The state weather bureau said this tropical depression “is unlikely to directly affect the country within the next three days. However, the Southwest Monsoon that it enhances may still bring moderate to heavy rains over the western portion of Luzon over the next three days.”

‘Butchoy’ is forecast to move generally west northwestward until Saturday, July 20, before turning more north-northwestward by Sunday, July 21.

“On the track forecast, this tropical depression may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility within the next 12 hours. Furthermore, a landfall scenario over Hainan, China is likely by late Sunday or early Monday (22 July),” PAGASA said.

“’Butchoy’ will likely have limited intensification within the next two days, but is forecast to reach tropical storm category by tomorrow. Rapid weakening is possible after its landfall over Hainan, China on Monday,” it added.

‘Carina,’ meanwhile, is affecting the eastern part of Eastern Visayas. PAGASA is yet to issue details of its movement as of this posting.
