The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Saturday assured the public the government is prepared for La Niña.

MMDA Special Events head Emmanuel Miro announced during a Quezon City news forum that the agency is actively clearing waterways across the metropolis.

“Preparation for La Niña is ongoing right now. We are continuously working on clearing our canals, estuaries, and other waterways through our flood control office,” Miro said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued a La Niña Alert on Friday, predicting a 70-percent chance of La Niña forming between August and October and lasting until early 2025.

PAGASA warned of increased rainfall, tropical cyclones, floods, and landslides in vulnerable areas. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has since confirmed the government is taking necessary steps, with the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Agriculture (DA) already preparing.
