Makati Mayor Abigail Binay on Wednesday turned over of P1million in financial assistance to Davao de Oro province which was heavily damaged by continuous rains spawned by the shear line early this year.
Davao de Oro provincial treasurer Grace Quintana received the check on behalf of her province in simple ceremony held at the Makati City Hall.
Mayor Binay said apart from Davao de Oro, the municipalities of Kapalong in Davao del Norte and Lupon and Caraga in Davao Oriental which suffered agricultural setbacks due to the shear line and tropical cyclone Kabayan late last year would also receive financial assistance from the city government.
The mayor expressed hopes that the cash aid would help bring relief to the affected communities.
“We know they need all the help they can get to recover from the damage caused by severe weather events. Through financial support, we hope to alleviate some of the burdens of fellow local government units in recovery and rehabilitation,” Binay said.
Aside from the cash assistance, the mayor said Makati was also willing to accommodate local government units (LGUs) that want to engage in knowledge exchange and benchmarking activities with the city government. “We are ready to share our sound practices in various aspects of governance, including disaster risk reduction and management, to help other localities bounce back better and become more climate-resilient," she said.
The city government has allocated a total of P2.25 million for the latest batch of financial aid recipients. The municipalities of Kapalong in Davao del Norte and Caraga in Davao Oriental are set to receive P500,000 each, while the town of Lupon, Davao Oriental will receive P250,000.
Since her first term. Mayor Binay has made it her priority to help disaster-stricken localities across the country.
From 2016 to the present, the city has allotted a total of P168.55 million in financial assistance to 283 cities, municipalities, and provinces.
