A SPECIAL education teacher from Hagonoy, Bulacan has been named Teacher of the Year 2022-2023 at the Hisperian Elementary School in California, United States.
Billy Esmalde was also nominated for the San Lorenzo Unified School District Teacher of the Year, marking a historic milestone as the first Filipino teacher to achieve these honors.
Esmalde has over 22 years of in the teaching profession.. He holds a background in Occupational Therapy and a Master’s degree in Special Education. His career spans 15 years in the Philippines, 2.5 years in Saudi Arabia, and the last five years teaching children with moderate to severe autism in the United States.
“Esmalde’s commitment to quality education for children with special needs is evident in his innovative teaching methods and compassionate approach,” a statement said.
“His work has created an inclusive, supportive environment, fostering significant progress in his students’ academic and personal development. His dedication and effectiveness highlight the critical impact special education teachers have on their students’ lives,” it added.
