Paying it forward: Kat Pimentel distributes free shoes to 1,000 Marikina students

For many families, the start of the school year can be a financial burden. The cost of uniforms, supplies, and shoes could add up quickly. This year, however, the “Libreng Sapatos” Program initiated by Kat Pimentel, wife of Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, has provided some relief to about 1,000 students in District 1 of Marikina.

Ma. Anna Kathryna Yu-Pimentel, the President’s Special Envoy to the United Arab Emirates for Trade and Investment, distributed shoes to 1,000 top-performing elementary public school students in District 1 of Marikina. The distribution event took place at Marikina Elementary School, bringing joy and recognition to the city’s brightest young scholars.

The beneficiary students eagerly lined up together with their parents, excited to receive their new shoes.

The special envoy for UAE shared that she is only paying it forward, as she was inspired by the joy and support she received as a child when she got new shoes at the start of each school year and Christmas.

“As a kid, receiving new shoes was a special moment that motivated me to do my best. Now, I have the opportunity to pass on that same encouragement to deserving students,” she said.

Pimentel emphasized that shoes are more than just clothing; they symbolize every step toward a brighter future. In receiving this gift, she acknowledged the students’ hard work and dedication.

The shoes, she explained, are a testament to her belief in the students’ potential. “Each pair represents our belief in your abilities and potential. With every step you take, know that I am with you on your journey,” Pimentel said.

The initiative, spearheaded by Pimentel and in partnership with the Philippine Footwear Federation Inc., (PFFI) aims to reward academic excellence while supporting local shoemakers in Marikina, known as the shoe capital of the Philippines.

Ms. Mia Santos, director of PFFI, thanked Pimentel for heeding their call to revitalize the shoemaking industry in Marikina.

Santos said by partnering with the PFFI, the program not only rewards the students’ academic achievements but also provides much-needed support to Marikina’s local shoemakers.

Jessica Beltran, Principal at Marikina Elementary School, said that for these young scholars, the shoes are a reminder that their hard work is recognized.
