Typhoons affect P40-m assets of ECs

State-run National Electrification Administration (NEA) reported an initial estimated damage of over P40 million on electric cooperative (EC) facilities from the four major storms that hit the Philippines in November.

The NEA said in a statement the latest figure covers the trails of destruction left on the rural electrification sector by Typhoons Marce, Nika, Ofel and Pepito, which slammed into almost the same regions and provinces over the past few weeks since Nov. 4.

Data released by the NEA Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department (DRRMD) placed at least 27 ECs operating in 21 provinces from seven regions under close and continuous monitoring in the wake of the consecutive tropical cyclones as of Nov. 18

NEA said four ECs including Aurora Electric Cooperative in Aurora, First Catanduanes Electric Cooperative, Nueva Vizcaya Electric Cooperative in Nueva Vizcaya,and Quirino Electric Cooperative in Quirino had to temporarily shut down operations due to the effects of super typhoon Pepito.
