The Department of Tourism, together with the Department of Trade and Industry and the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos, announced their support for the Halal Expo Philippines and the first Philippines International Health and Wellness Congress in November 2024.

“We are pleased that we are hosting the very first Philippine’s International Health and Wellness Congress which will bring in buyers from the Middle East and various other countries to position the Philippines as a health and wellness destination, in addition to becoming Halal and Muslim friendly,” said DOT Secretary Christina Frasco.

Frasco made the announcement during the House Committee on Appropriations hearing on the proposed 2025 budget of the DOT on Tuesday where she received commendations from members of the House of Representatives for her leadership in promoting halal tourism in the country.

The expo aims to explore the huge potential for the halal industry to thrive in the Philippines, further strengthening its position in the market.

Frasco highlighted several initiatives implemented to bolster the country’s appeal to Muslim travelers, including the release of guidelines on standards for accommodations, restaurants and services catering to Muslim needs.

She also noted the partnership with Megaworld Corp. to convert all 13 of its properties nationwide to become Muslim-friendly.

The DOT is also actively expanding the network of halal-friendly establishments nationwide, currently at 289, and showcasing the rich halal culinary offerings of Mindanao through events like Bismillah.

Infrastructure development, including the establishment of tourist rest areas in Sulu and Tawi-Tawi, and collaboration with the BARMM Ministry of Tourism, aim to improve accessibility and service quality.

Frasco said the DOT’s active pursuit of stronger ties with countries like Brunei and Qatar underscored its commitment to making the Philippines an inclusive and welcoming destination for Muslims.
