The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is working with the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) to expedite the relocation of power facilities that will be affected by ongoing rail projects.
DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista thanked Meralco for completing 47 percent of nearly 700 relocation work orders,
“We are grateful to Meralco for acting swiftly on these work orders,” Bautista said.
Bautista said to meet the DOTr’s construction schedule for rail projects, several Meralco power facilities needed to be relocated.
“We want Meralco to be on board, so we can efficiently solve right-of-way issues and accomplish these projects as soon as possible,” he said.
The DOTr earlier said 23 of its 69 infrastructure projects focused on railway improvements and expansions.
Five of these projects, including the North-South Commuter Railway, Metro Manila Subway, LRT Line 1 Cavite Extension, MRT Line 7 and MRT Line 3 rehabilitation, are under construction.
Bautista said the railway projects were expected to resolve the country’s traffic woes. He said the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) System could service at least a million passengers, while the MRT-3 line could carry 500,000 passengers daily once completed.
The Metro Manila Subway can accommodate 519,000 passengers daily, while the MRT-7 and LRT-1 Cavite Extension Project are expected to transport 800,000 passengers and 300,000 passengers, respectively.
