The Philippines recorded a surge in demand for fresh Norwegian salmon, according to May 2024 data from the Norwegian Seafood Council in Bangkok.

The country’s market growth of over 169 percent was the second highest in the ASEAN region, with a robust annual average growth rate from 2020 to 2023.

“There is much potential for Norwegian salmon and other high quality Norwegian seafood in the Philippines. We continue to engage and explore market opportunities in the country and tap areas for demand for not only high quality, but also sustainable seafood,” said Norwegian Ambassador to the Philippines Christian Halaas Lyster.

The Philippines’ increasing share reflects a broader regional trend, with Norwegian seafood exports to Southeast Asia growing at an average of 24 percent per year.

Salmon saw a 90-percent value increase in the region from 2020 to 2023.

Other Southeast Asian markets, such as Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia, have also experienced substantial growth in Norwegian seafood imports.

The Norwegian Seafood Pavilion will return to the World Food Expo 2024, one of the Philippines’ largest food trade shows to further promote Norwegian seafood in the Philippines.
