SM Foundation invests in community health systems, teams up with gov’t

SM Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the SM Group, said the COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in healthcare systems around the world and recognizing this, it focused on improving access to quality primary healthcare in partnership with national and local governments.

One key initiative is medical missions, which provide free consultations, basic laboratory tests, dental check-ups and medication to residents of remote or economically disadvantaged communities.

SM Foundation has conducted over 1,600 missions this year, benefiting nearly 1.3 million patients.

“Patients who once endured long queues at crowded healthcare facilities now find relief as we bring healthcare services to remote villages or provide them conveniently at our malls and properties,” said SM Foundation executive director for health and medical programs Connie Angeles.

SM Foundation also invests in improving healthcare facilities. Rural health centers are lifelines for many communities, offering comprehensive services at minimal or no cost.

The foundation refurbishes these centers, not just to improve functionality but also to create a more welcoming and patient-centered environment.

“The refurbishment of public healthcare facilities not only enhances their capabilities but also makes them more responsive and conducive to the health needs and recovery of those they serve,” Angeles said.

These renovations allow centers to meet PhilHealth accreditation standards, which increases PhilHealth utilization and reduces burdens on city hospitals. Patients can then avail themselves of PhilHealth benefits like primary care, maternity care and pharmacy needs at the local level.

A recent example is SM Foundation’s 200th rural health center in Laguna. Dr. Elmira Montesa, who leads the Santa Cruz Rural Health Unit (SCRHU), said the lack of space hampered their ability to offer programs. Following Department of Health guidelines, SM Foundation renovated the SCRHU, creating comfortable waiting areas, dedicated facilities for specific patient groups, and a rainwater catchment system.

SM Foundation also revitalized the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital’s (UP-PGH) post-COVID & PulmoCare hub in 2023. The refurbished facility now has dedicated areas for rehabilitation, ultrasound, cardiopulmonary exercise testing and virtual consultation.

Another project involved a community birthing facility in Barangay Irawan, Puerto Princesa, which had to close in 2018 due to failing to meet government standards.

SM Foundation revamped the facility in 2023, enabling it to obtain the required licenses and resume operations. The renovated center includes dedicated rooms for various functions, a rainwater harvesting system, and energy-efficient lighting and appliances.

These initiatives by SM Foundation highlight the importance of private sector involvement in strengthening healthcare systems and ensuring equitable access to quality care for all Filipinos.
