Globe bullish on 5G despite slow adoption amid high cost

Globe Telecom said Friday it continues to expand its 5G network nationwide despite the slow adoption due to the current high cost of 5G-compatible devices.

The telecom unit of the Ayala Group said it deployed 27 new 5G sites across the Philippines in the first quarter of 2024 as part of its commitment to providing cutting-edge technology and superior connectivity to its customers.

The rollout further boosts Globe’s 5G outdoor coverage, reaching 98.35 percent in the National Capital Region (NCR) and 92.86 percent in key cities in the Visayas and Mindanao in the first quarter of 2024.

The addition of the new 5G sites propelled Globe’s network to accommodate over six million 5G devices in March 2024.

It said that despite the ongoing rollout, it strategically moderated its spending on new 5G sites, taking into account current market conditions and the ongoing search for viable use cases that fully leverage the potential of 5G technology.

The approach reflects the company’s commitment to advancing technology while ensuring sustainable and strategic deployment.

Globe also strengthened its global presence by expanding its 5G partnerships, collaborating with 167 global partners in 87 destinations worldwide in addition to enhancing domestic coverage.

The extensive network of partnerships ensures that Globe customers can enjoy seamless 5G connectivity while traveling abroad, maintaining high-speed internet access and uninterrupted communication.

“We remain unwavering in our commitment to innovation and excellence in connectivity. We believe in unlocking new opportunities for businesses and consumers alike, driving economic growth, and improving quality of life,” Globe senior vice president and head of network planning and engineering Joel Agustin said.

“Our strategic approach with 5G ensures that we not only lead in technology deployment but also provide our customers with unparalleled connectivity and seamless experiences both locally and internationally,” he said.

5G technology offers significantly faster internet speeds compared to its predecessors, allowing users to download large files, stream high-definition videos, and access cloud-based applications with minimal latency.

With 5G, multiple devices can connect to the network simultaneously without compromising speed or performance, which is particularly beneficial in densely populated areas and for IoT (Internet of Things) applications.
