Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez on Wednesday said he is supporting and endorsing the mobilization of government resources to assist the victims of the recent fire in Puerto Princesa.

Romualdez is acting as the caretaker of the congressional district of Palawan following the passing of Rep. Edward Hagedorn.

Early morning Wednesday, Feb. 7, a fire broke in Barangay Pagkakaisa and Barangay Bagong Silang, affecting over 450 households and 920 families, equivalent to approximately  individuals.

The City Social Welfare Development (CSWD) is currently in the process of finalizing the tally of those impacted.

Understanding the urgency of the situation, Speaker Romualdez has endorsed the allocation of funds under the 2024 General Appropriations Act. This includes the provision of “ayuda” or assistance, amounting to P10,000 per family affected, through the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The local government unit (LGU) of Puerto Princesa and the Hagedorn family have reached out for assistance in this crisis.

In response, Romualdez assured that the government is committed to providing immediate and effective aid to the victims, ensuring they receive the support needed to rebuild their lives.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy that has befallen the residents of Barangay. Pagkakaisa and Barangay Bagong Silang. In these trying times, it is imperative that we come together as a nation to support our fellow Filipinos. The provision of financial assistance is a crucial step in our concerted efforts to aid in their recovery,” said Romualdez.

The Speaker’s office, in coordination with the DSWD and other relevant agencies, is working tirelessly to expedite the distribution of aid. They are also in close communication with the LGU of Puerto Princesa to ensure that all necessary support is provided promptly and efficiently.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available. The Speaker’s office extends its gratitude to all who are contributing to the relief efforts and encourages continued support for the affected families.
