A departed dog leads couple to a home for unwanted dogs

Losing a dog is one of the most painful experiences for an animal lover.

It is like losing a human loved one. The grieving process is as long, the moving on part  is as elusive, seemingly impossible.

Rhea Joyce Abat and husband Job lost their  rott Conan two months ago.

They refused to let go of the beautiful  memories that tug at their hearts and instead, decided to help less fortunate dogs to thank their dog Conan for making their lives colorful and more meaningful when he was still alive.

Conan, the beloved dog of Rhea and Job

RHEA  JOYCE ABAT describes a part of her journey to healing below:

Last October 29, our dog, Conan, died.

To say that we were devastated is an understatement.

Conan was no ordinary dog. He was a gentle giant, a clown, sociable, and went against the stereotypical notions people had about his breed (rottweiler). He was part of our family.

People encouraged us to get another dog as a replacement for Conan. They said it would help us with the healing process.

At that time, my husband, Job, and I were not open to the idea.

Rhea with the caretakers of  Save ALL for whom she cooked  breakfast.  Save ALL had only ensaymada for a cake but Rhea was so grateful and made a wish.

Instead, we thought of celebrating Conan’s life. We also wanted to celebrate how Conan has touched our lives and taught us to be more compassionate and empathetic.

That is why on December 29, I decided to celebrate my birthday at the care homes for rescued dogs and cats of  Save Animals of Love and Light (Save ALL). We wanted to honor the organizers, volunteers and caretakers. These silent heroes selflessly gave their time, efforts and meager resources to the care of rescued animals. We brought some healthcare and food supplies for the rescues and enjoyed a simple breakfast with the caretakers.

Job and I were treated with a tour of the place.

Job, Rhea’s husband, is a  natural with dogs. He instantly made friends with rescued dog Sunshine who has one undeveloped   kidney and is on a  prescription diet and maintenance meds.

Walking around, we were in awe with the dedication of Save ALL in rehabilitating the rescues. The dogs and cats were in top health. They were clean and their fur were so soft! Job and I kept on repeating, “Ang linis linis nila!”

We got a glimpse of the food that the caretakers were preparing. The menu consisted of organic vegetables, which we think are mixed with the dog food. It smelled so good that I lingered for a while in the kitchen.

Sanitation of the place is a priority. The living areas were well maintained. There was no foul odor.

Each rescue had its own cage equipped with a sleeping mat and food bowl.

The cats even had hammocks and climbing posts. I remember saying, “Ang sosyal ng mga pusa ha. Parang nasa resort lang.”

What also fascinated us was how organized their system is. Apart from the names of the rescues posted on the cages, it also contained vital information such as healthcare needs and special feeding instructions.

It was easy to fall in love with the rescues. Most were not wary of strangers and it was easy to pet them. They looked at us with loving eyes.

After that visit, Job and I have expressed our interest in adopting two rescued dogs. No, not as a replacement for Conan. We realized that we had so much love to give and we have the heart to care for these once abandoned animals. We realized that we also share their advocacy.

It was a meaningful experience for us.

We were again reminded that in a world where indifference and hate prevail, there are individuals who take the time to make the world a better place. Save ALL’s advocacy for animal welfare is truly moving.

We are sure Conan is nodding in approval in Heaven.
