Senator Grace Poe has been honored as PETA Asia’s 2024 Person of the Year for her dedication to animal welfare in the Philippines.
The organization announced this recognition on Friday, highlighting Poe’s efforts in advocating for a significant legislative measure aimed at enhancing animal protection.
This legislation, Senate Bill No. 2458, also known as the Revised Animal Welfare Act, seeks to address the issue of homeless animals by providing government funding for free sterilization services.
PETA Asia noted that the bill would improve disaster relief for animals, enforce stricter animal welfare standards, and increase penalties for offenders.
Additionally, it would allow trained volunteers to assist in rescuing mistreated animals.
Poe has actively collaborated with PETA Asia on her animal welfare initiatives, inviting them to join her technical working group.
This partnership led to a proposed amendment to prohibit the import of elephants into the country, preventing their suffering in captivity.
Jason Baker, PETA Asia’s Senior Vice President, praised Poe as a relentless advocate for animal rights in the Senate.
He urged others to follow her example by supporting animal welfare and promoting spaying or neutering pets.
