Arellano University got its first gold medal as Stanley Roy Laguio ruled the bantamweight division of speed kicking in taekwondo action in the NCAA Season 96 last Thursday.
Laguio had an average score of 6.583 points, besting San Sebastian College’s Axl Zerrudo (6.442 points) San Beda University’s Michael Christian Macario (6.383) as they settled for silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Zerrudo’s podium finish also put the Stag to the medal tally in the men’s online competition shown over the GTV channel of GMA-7, the league’s new broadcast partner.
So far, the Red Jins still lead the medal standings with a 1-1-3 gold-silver-bronze haul, while the College of St. Benilde Blazers are at second spot with one gold and one bronze.
Another Chiefs’ bet, Carl Louie Ayaton, placed fourth with 6.342.
Rounding out the finishers are San Beda’s Gianne Kyle Sarmiento Legaspi (6.308), Jose Rizal University’s John Jezra Lorena Sasutona (5.950) and CSB’s Kian Graydon Ashe (5.917).
The speed kicking competition in the NCAA will continue with the men’s division until June 29, followed by the women’s category on June 30 to July 5. This season’s host Letran is in charge of the overall staging of events.
