The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has implemented a change starting Season 87, introducing the Best Foreign Student-Athlete award across all UAAP sports where statistical points determine individual performance rankings.

This decision, which was approved last season, ensures that foreign student-athletes who dominate the statistical leaderboards receive proper recognition while maintaining the prestige of the Most Valuable Player award for the highest-ranked local student-athlete.

UAAP Executive Director Atty. Rene “Rebo” Saguisag explained how the new award will work within the league’s framework during the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Volleyball press conference, Thursday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

“This was approved last year for implementation this season. The Best Foreign Student-Athlete award will be given across all UAAP sports but only if a foreign student-athlete finishes as the leader in events where statistical points are available. In that case, they will receive the Best Foreign Student-Athlete award, while the highest-ranking local student-athlete in the statistical race will be recognized as the Most Valuable Player,” explained Atty. Saguisag.

This means that if an FSA tops the statistical race in sports such as basketball or volleyball —where numerical performance metrics are recorded—they will be honored with the new title.

Meanwhile, local student-athletes who finish as the top-performing homegrown talent will receive the MVP distinction.

FSAs will still continue to be eligible for other individual awards, such as selections to All-UAAP Teams or Mythical Teams in their respective sports. Additionally, international student-athletes who previously studied in a Philippine high school can still qualify for Rookie of the Year honors.

“The reason behind this is to ensure that we properly recognize both our local and international student-athletes while maintaining the spirit of the league’s competition,” Saguisag added.

“By implementing the Best Foreign Student-Athlete award, we ensure that if an FSA leads the statistical points race, they are duly recognized, while still allowing a local student-athlete to be awarded MVP.”
