Top seed Alex Eala needed an extra day to complete her match against Dutch player Anouk Koevermans at the WTA 125-level Oeiras Ladies Open in Portugal.
When play resumed Tuesday evening under clearer skies, the 19-year-old Filipino quickly wrapped up the remaining games, winning four straight to seal a 6-3, 6-4 victory and move into the Round of 16.
Ranked No. 72 in the world, Eala required just 14 minutes to close out the rain-delayed match. Overall, she spent a total of one hour and 26 minutes on court to dispatch Koevermans, who is ranked No. 188 and was leading 4-2 in the second set before the suspension.
Before the match was halted, Eala was mounting a comeback and led 30-0 in the seventh game. Play was eventually called off after three rain delays, as worsening weather left the clay court unplayable.
Once play resumed, Eala broke Koevermans’ serve three times and fought back from 15-40 in the final game, winning a series of long rallies to secure the win.
She landed nine of her 17 first serves in the resumed portion of the match to complete the comeback.
