Hands off the passports, NAIA security guards told

Security personnel at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) have been instructed not to touch passengers’ passports during entry and security checks, ensuring the protection of travel documents.

This directive from the New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) follows a viral social media post from a passenger whose relative was denied boarding due to a tear in his passport.

“Passengers will simply be asked to show their valid ID or travel document by holding it up themselves,” the NNIC said.

The incident involving the torn passport took place at an airline check-in counter at NAIA Terminal 3.

The NNIC, however, clarified that there have been no reports of mishandling by NAIA security personnel.

“As the airport operator, and in the spirit of teamwork with all stakeholders, we continue to take proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of all passengers,” the NNIC added.

The NNIC is collaborating closely with airline partners, the Department of Transportation (DOTr), and the Bureau of Immigration (BI) to strengthen procedures and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Transportation and aviation officials have advised domestic and international airlines to ensure that while it is their responsibility to check the validity and integrity of passports, their personnel should not misuse this authority.

“In accordance with established protocols, airlines must coordinate with the immigration authorities of the passenger’s destination country to verify whether a passport deemed tampered with or damaged will be accepted,” the DOTr stated.

The agency is investigating the incident and has already contacted the immigration authorities in Bali, Indonesia to confirm if they assessed that the passenger’s passport would not be accepted, which led to the airline’s official claim of denial of boarding.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines and the Civil Aeronautics Board have been tasked with investigating additional allegations of deliberate passport tampering at certain airports.

The Philippine government assures the public that if these claims are proven true, they will not be tolerated.

Authorities also urge the public to ensure their passports are in good condition. If there are any doubts—especially regarding minor tears—passengers are encouraged to consult with passport centers of the Department of Foreign Affairs or with airport authorities.
