THE Games and Amusements Board (GAB), in collaboration with the Association of the Philippine Professional Boxing Ring Officials (APPBRO), recently held a crucial meeting to enhance the regulatory framework for individuals aspiring to become professional boxing officials.
The initiative aims to maintain fairness, integrity, and competence in officiating while ensuring stricter yet efficient licensing procedures.
GAB chairman Atty. Francisco J. Rivera, alongside key representatives from the Boxing and Other Contact Sports Division, spearheaded the discussion with APPBRO officials at the GAB Central Office in Makati.
The meeting centered on reinforcing measures for acquiring a GAB license as a boxing referee or judge while addressing various concerns raised by APPBRO regarding officiating standards and protocols.
Rivera reaffirmed GAB’s unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards in professional boxing officiating.
He emphasized that the licensing process would remain transparent, fair, and merit-based, ensuring that only well-trained and competent officials preside over professional matches.
Stricter regulations are needed to prevent controversies involving fight outcomes that may spark debates over the quality of officiating.
Several bouts in the past have been marred by accusations of biased judging or incompetent refereeing, raising concerns within the boxing community and among fight fans.
By tightening the regulatory process, GAB and APPBRO aim to eliminate any doubts about the credibility of officiating in professional boxing events.
Individuals aspiring to become professional boxing judges or referees in the Philippines must undergo a rigorous application process through the GAB.
Before being approved, they receive extensive training under the supervision of seasoned APPBRO officials.
