Amit secures World Games’ slot after silver feat in Doha

RUBILEN Amit, the Philippines’ most accomplished female cue artist, has secured her place at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China.

This came following a thrilling silver-medal finish at the recent Asian 10-Ball Women’s Pool Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Amit, a three-time world champion, narrowly missed out on the gold, falling to China’s Liu Shasha in a closely contested final, 7-6.

Fellow Filipina Chezka Centeno, who bowed to Liu in the semifinals, joined China’s Yu Han on the podium with a shared third-place finish.

“This silver medal secures my qualification for the World Games, and I’m thrilled,” said Amit, a 10-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist.

The 43-year-old Cebuana wants to add more color to his padded collection of achievements, including three world titles, most recently the WPA Women’s World 9-Ball Championship in New Zealand earlier this year.

Amit’s World Games qualification follows in the footsteps of fellow Filipino greats.

Carlo Biado blazed a trail for Filipino athletes at the 2017 World Games in Wroclaw, Poland, capturing gold in men’s nine-ball singles.

This historic victory marked the Philippines’ first gold medal at this prestigious multi-sport event, which showcases non-Olympic sports. Karateka Junna Tsukii continued this winning tradition at the 2022 Birmingham edition, securing gold in the women’s 50kg kumite.

Amit will join a strong contingent of Filipino athletes in Chengdu.

Olympic boxer-turned-kickboxer Hergie Bacyadan, the Philippine dragon boat team, and the floorball team will also represent the country.

The dragon boat squad earned their berth with a dominant performance at the ICF Dragon Boat World Championships in Puerto Princesa City, where they amassed an impressive haul of 11 gold, 20 silver, and 16 bronze medals.

Bacyadan secured her qualification by claiming victory in the women’s K1 -70kg division at the 2024 Asian Kickboxing Championships in Cambodia.
