Jarvey Gayoso, who cut his honeymoon short to play, scored the only goal for the Philippines in their 1-1 draw with Vietnam on Wednesday night.
The stalemate marked the end of a 12-year winless streak for the Philippines against Vietnam in the 2024 ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup, following a hard-fought match at Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
The Filipinos should have walked away with a victory, but Ngoc Tan Doan denied them in dramatic fashion, heading in an equalizer for Vietnam in the seventh minute of stoppage time.
Gayoso, who had just returned from his wedding, came on in the 65th minute as a substitute for Bjorn Kristensen. Just four minutes later, he gave the Philippines a brief lead, scoring with a left-footed strike in the 69th minute. This almost handed the Filipinos their first win over Vietnam in eight encounters since 2010.
Despite Gayoso’s heroics, the match ended in a draw, with 3,346 fans in attendance. The result strengthened Vietnam’s hold on first place, bringing them closer to a semifinal spot with a 2-1-0 record (seven points).
Earlier, Myanmar secured a 3-2 victory over Laos in Yangon, thanks to a late brace from Win Naing Tun and an opening goal from Lwin Moe Aung. The win kept Myanmar’s knockout-stage hopes alive, as they share a 1-1-1 record with Indonesia.
Looking ahead, the Philippines will face Indonesia in Surakarta, while Vietnam will host Myanmar in Viet Tri in their next matches.
