PUERTO PRINCESA—Rookie Rose Jane Barcelona of Sorsogon had three goals and got her second one on Day 4 of the 2024 Batang Pinoy national championships at the Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex here.
The 16-year-old Barcelona, a seventh grader at Gallanosa National High School, leaped to her best attempt at 10.99 meters, to claim the gold medal in the girls’ under-16 triple jump finals.
This was higher than the Irosin-based Barcelona’s 10.64, which allowed her to gain her first mint in the 2024 Palarong Pambansa in Cebu City last July.
She would have done better at 11.30 meters, but Barcelona fouled out on her attempt at that distance. Passi’s Jazzybelle Mesterio settled for the silver at 10.64 meters, while Natalie Pablico (Caloocan) took the bronze at 10.32 meters.
“Masaya po. Nagbunga po ang training ko,” said Barcelona, who earlier captured a mint in the long jump action at 5.07 meters while seeking a podium finish in the 100-meter sprints as well.
Meanwhile, Negros Occidental’s Marianne Pedales topped the girls’ U16 shotput in 9.72 meters, Navotas’ Jayson Prades ruled the boys’ U16 racewalk in 9:41.21 and Ilocos Sur’s Jane Bundoc outpaced her rivals distaff side at 11:48.7.
Pasig stayed in the lead in the race for the overall honors, with 44 golds, 27 silvers and 48 bronzes, with the City of Baguio in second (32-32-38) and Quezon City in third at 27-24-35. Davao City is fourth (20-17-15).
