Iloilo grew by 4.6 percent in 2023, slower compared to the 8.5 percent growth recorded in 2022, according to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
Despite the slowdown, the province’s gross domestic product (GDP) rose by P9.42 billion, reaching P215.42 billion in 2023, up from P206.01 billion in the previous year.
Among the 16 industries monitored, the “Other Services” sector led growth with a 26.3 percent increase followed by “Accommodation and Food Service Activities” at 23.4 percent and “Transportation and Storage Activities” at 22.8 percent.
In contrast, the agriculture, forestry, and fishing sector declined by nine percent, significantly affecting the province’s overall economic performance.
Engr. Jose Noel Cabaluna, Project Evaluation Officer for the Iloilo Provincial Government, attributed the contraction in agriculture to challenges such as the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak and the adverse effects of recent typhoons.
To mitigate these impacts, Cabaluna highlighted ongoing efforts by the provincial government to implement programs supporting farmers and enhancing resilience against animal diseases and climate-related risks.
These initiatives reflect Iloilo’s commitment to fostering sustainable growth while addressing vulnerabilities in its vital agricultural sector.
