Siargao, the Philippines’ surfing paradise, is currently hosting the 28th Siargao International Surfing Cup (SISC), a prestigious World Surf League (WSL) QS5000 event. This year’s competition, running from October 26 to November 4, has drawn 253 surfers from 17 countries to the island’s world-class waves.
Rep. Bingo Matugas, a staunch supporter of Siargao’s surfing scene, expressed pride in the island’s journey from a local surf spot to a global surfing destination. The SISC, first held in 1994, has grown into the Philippines’ largest international surfing tournament.
“Our journey—carving the first road to Cloud 9 to hosting this QS5000 event—symbolizes the enduring strength and resilience of the Siargaonon spirit,” Matugas said.
The elevated QS5000 status signifies Siargao’s growing prominence in the global surfing community. The event has attracted top-tier surfers, reaffirming the island’s reputation as a premier surfing locale.
Siargao’s surfing history dates back to the 1980s when Australian surfer Steve Jones discovered the legendary Cloud 9 break. Since then, the island has become a mecca for surfers worldwide, thanks to its pristine waves and supportive community.
The SISC’s return in 2022, after a pandemic-induced hiatus, marked a significant milestone. The event continues to nurture local talent through initiatives like the Bagtik Surfers, founded by Rep. Matugas.
The recent reconstruction of the iconic Cloud 9 tower, destroyed by Typhoon Odette in 2021, symbolizes Siargao’s resilience. With the support of local leaders and organizations, the tower was rebuilt in time for this year’s competition.
Established in 1994, the SISC has evolved from a local competition into the largest international surfing tournament in the Philippines.
The competition has garnered support from various organizations, including the Office of Speaker Ferdinand Romualdez, Bagtik MoSerbisyo, the World Surf League, the Municipality of Gen. Luna, Manila Bankers Assurance, Kaiser International Health Group, the Department of Tourism, Alagang Tingog Party List, Gomo, Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, PAGSS, Philippine Airlines, New Era Caps, Euronet, and many others.
