Winston’s heroics push Converge past San Miguel, forces Game 5 showdown

Deschon Winston’s explosive third-quarter surge propelled the Converge FiberXers to a commanding 114-100 victory over the San Miguel Beermen in Game 4 of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 49 Governors’ Cup quarterfinals at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Friday.

The win forced a sudden-death Game 5 in the series.

Winston led the charge with 26 points, including a pivotal 16-point outburst during a decisive third quarter.

His efforts helped Converge overturn a 51-56 halftime deficit and sparked a 37-point offensive barrage that gave the FiberXers an 88-79 lead by the end of the third quarter.

Converge head coach Franco Atienza downplayed the significance of their Game 4 performance, emphasizing that all previous stats and efforts would be irrelevant in the upcoming Game 5, set for Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

“We’ve forced a sudden death, but when you get to that point, stats no longer matter. The burden of past numbers is gone. It’s just about one more game,” said Atienza.

Winston was ably supported by teammates Justin Arana and Jalen Jones, who added 25 and 22 points respectively, helping Converge win their second straight game and keep their playoff hopes alive.
