THE Philippines seeks the inclusion of more events in gymnastics in the coming 2025 Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand.
Gymnastics Association of the Philippines president Cynthia Carrion learned that many events may be removed.
“We don’t know yet what are the events that will be held in gymnastics yet. There are only 600 medals at stake in the games. They are still studying the events in gymnastics,” said Carrion.
Carrion has made her appeal to Thailand’s gymnastics chief Jiradech Worapeankul so that the GAP will be properly informed before any events are removed in men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics.
The two disciplines are events where the Philippines won many medals in the past.
The Philippines was informed that organizers are set to exclude the all-around and team events.
Also, the status of rhythmic and aero gymnastics is also in limbo.
As of Sept. 26, the SEA Games Federation (SEAGF) has approved the inclusion of tenpin bowling, sports climbing and cricket, following a meeting with Singapore officials.
This goes with the addition of two combat sports, wushu and ju-jitsu, which were not listed before, but added on Sept. 5, during a meeting between the SEAG Federation and Malaysian officials.
There are plans to have karate to be reinstated in the calendar of the regional meet.
Back in June, Thailand made proposals for 40 sports to be contested in Bangkok, Chonburi and Songkhla.
So far, lawn bowls and weightlifting are still not part of the calendar.
The final program will be officially confirmed after the council’s coming meeting in late October.
The Philippine Olympic Committee has earlier asked organizers to add wrestling, jiujitsu, chess, weightlifting, kurash and dancesport to the list of events that will be played in the biennial meet.
Only jiujitsu was green-lit from the POC’s list.
