Her daughter, Lyn Majaducon, confirmed the death of 86-year-old Penuela to the Manila Standard.

“Wala na po siya e,” said Majaducon, who earlier appealed to the sports sports community for medical assistance.

Various sports pages and personalities rallied to support Penuela’s medical needs.

“Contributions are needed for Irene Penuela, the 1958 Asian Games silver medalist in athletics, who is currently bedridden and unable to eat due to her advanced age,” stated a post from Sports Corner PH, accompanied by a photo of Penuela in her current condition.

A sportswriter also shared a post from a former sports official featuring an old photo of Penuela competing in the 1958 Asian Games.

Penuela was a 4×100 meter relay team member alongside Inocensia Solis, Rogelia Ferrer, and Francisca Sanopal, who collectively secured a silver medal.

During the same games, Inocensia Solis was named Asia’s fastest woman after winning the 100 meters with a time of 12.5 seconds.

The Philippines sent 148 athletes to the Tokyo Games, finishing second overall in the medal standings with 9 golds, 19 silvers, and 12 bronzes.
