Luisita wrests lead in Fil-Am golf

Baguio—Luisita banked on the pair of 30 points from Abe Rosal and Benjie Sumulong to wrest the lead against Manila Southwoods in the Fil-Championship division of the 73rd Fil Am Golf Invitational at the Baguio Country Club on Wednesday.

The Tarlac-based squad also got 28 from Dan Cruz and 26 from Rodel Mangulabnan for 114 and a three-day total of 380.

“It was a solid team effort today,” said Luisita non-playing skipper Jeric Hechanova.

Manila Southwoods made 105, but no one from its players had 30 or more at the tough par-61 layout. Raul Miñoza was the top man with 29 followed by Manfred Guangko 28, Jun Plana 25 and Bong Brobio 23 for the team’s 371 output.

In the Am Championship, Joseph Tambunting scored 35 points and Monet Garcia added 33 as Manila Southwoods-2 moved a step closer to the crown.

Together with Thirdy Escaño’s 31 and Raul Magpantay’s 26, CJHGC-2 tallied 125 to pad its total to 312, extending the lead further to 32 over second-running Riviera (107-280).

It was a twin victory for Camp John Hay Golf Club as its two teams clinched titles in both Fil and Am A divisions.

CJHGC-1’s Villamor Bumanglag fired 26, Pacifico Fiesta contributed 24, Bayani Tecson and Dai Tsuchiya registered 21 apiece for 92 and 410.

Mars Garcia and Yun Hur led the assault with 35 and 31, respectively, while Pol Mayos signed for 27 and Manny Solis had 25. Baguio Blue Bloods wound up second with 353 after a 97 for CJHGC-2.

Albert Dionisio scored 20 at BCC to help Fil-Am Japan (67-322) capture the Fil-C crown. Dagupan Barkadahan (77-311) was the runner-up followed by Chemsol-Flowtork (69-308) and Solid North Transit (62-292).

Julio Cada of Golf F-SVGI became the fourth player to score a hole-in-one. He aced CJH’s Hole No. 13 (121) yards using a Beres 9-iron and TaylorMade #1 ball. Flighmates were Benny Paulino of Guam Seals, Boyet Brion of Mountaineers Discovery Club and Sonny Alinio of CaliPhil-Hawaii.
