Zamboanga’s Japy Silapan takes on ‘Alcatraz challenge’, hopes to promote PH Open Water Swim to international community

Zamboanga Peninsula (ZamPen) Open Water Swim President Silapan is set to take on a thrilling challenge as he participates in the Alcatraz Open Water Swim.

The event, known for its difficulty and excitement, will see participants swimming from Alcatraz Island to the shores of San Francisco.

Silapan, known for his adventurous spirit and love for water activities, is eager to take part in this unique event. The Alcatraz Open Water Swim is considered one of the most iconic open water swims in the world, attracting swimmers from different parts of the globe.

The swim covers approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) in the cold and choppy waters of San Francisco Bay. It requires endurance, strength, and mental fortitude to conquer challenging conditions and complete the swim successfully.

Silapan, who has been training rigorously for this event, expressed his excitement and determination to complete the swim. “I’m doing this for the community of open water swimmers in the Philippines and promote our Open Water activities to the international community,” said Silapan, who took his flight to the U.S. on Thursday.

He aims to inspire his constituents to embrace physical activities and explore new challenges. By participating in the Alcatraz Open Water Swim, he hopes to encourage the people of ZamPen to engage in sports and outdoor activities for their overall well-being.

“It’s going to be difficult because of the uniqueness of the waters surrounding the island,” Silapan added.

His participation in the Alcatraz Open Water Swim is expected to attract attention and bring recognition to the region. It highlights the region’s commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle and showcasing its potential as a tourist destination.

With the event fast approaching, Silapan continues to prepare himself physically and mentally for the swim. He looks forward to representing the Zamboanga Peninsula and completing this exhilarating challenge. His story will also be featured in the Pinoy Strong 100 under the same marketing proponent of International Open Water Swim One of a Kind Asia.

After a successful series in the Zamboangan Peninsula in cooperation with local governments and the Department of Tourism, Silapan is also set to launch Vizmin’s International Open Water Swim in Boracay this September 2023.
