Content creator Sassa Gurl is bringing viral sketches to the big screen with a much-anticipated debut in the prestigious Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. Sassa joins actress Marian Rivera in the Cinemalaya entry Balota, directed by Kip Oebanda.

When asked about landing a role in the upcoming film, Sassa revealed, “Right away, I said yes. I am very happy with the role. It’s different from what is usually seen in mainstream representation. I said I would take this because ‘this is for my nakshie!’”

Sassa then shared that the role in Balota differs from previous roles, mentioning the intention to use the platform to influence and educate the youth on social issues.

“This time around, it is very political. And usually, I don’t get political roles. Because, you know, the roles given to me are different. But now, I am very happy this time because it has a touch of our reality as LGBTQIA+ individuals,” explained Sassa.

‘Balota’ explores the story of a teacher running to the woods with the last ballot box following a violent turn of events during the elections

“Because you know, it’s important for the youth today. For my nakshie, right? Educating everyone about the advocacies and political issues happening in our country is really important. It is not just about using the platform for clout, right? It is also used to influence many people to think differently. And of course, to challenge the system we have, right?” Sassa continued.

Being part of the LGBTQIA+ community, the social media sensation also expressed hopes for more representation in mainstream media, emphasizing the need for queer artists to tell their own stories more effectively and relatable.

“Give opportunities to queer artists. Give opportunities to queer writers, directors. Give us space. Because you know, the best and most effective people to tell LGBTQIA+ stories are also LGBTQIA+. Give us our own space. So we can give color and life to our stories,” added Sassa.
